2024 Project Management Internship Reflections

As I wrap up my time as Project Management Intern at Avenue, I am filled with gratitude. When I first began my search for an internship, my primary goal was to immerse myself in the day-to-day workings as either a graphic designer or a project manager within an agency. I had a deep desire to explore both routes, but with these two careers typically running their own course, I anticipated having to choose one over the other.

During the interview process, Avenue showed a willingness to offer a broad range of exposure– The focus being in project management, but with an opportunity to contribute to internal design projects. I was also captivated by Avenue’s dedication to creating positive change in the environment and uplifting underrepresented communities, an aspect I deeply resonate with as a second generation Korean-American born to immigrants and the first to graduate from college in the family. It became clear that these principles were integral to the company’s identity and the clientele they pursued.

Over the past few months, my internship centered around three primary categories of projects:

Internal Redesign Projects

One of my main responsibilities involved internal redesign projects, including the redesign of the 2023 Impact Report and the rebranding of The Conscious Marketer Podcast marketing assets. Avenue had recently undergone a gorgeous rebrand, complete with a beautiful color scheme and delicate icons. My task was to align their existing assets with this new aesthetic.

The 2023 Impact Report presented a unique challenge; it was packed with information, and I needed to transform it into a format that was both visually appealing and easy to digest. This report was to be published on Avenue's website and made available as a downloadable PDF. In addressing this, I focused on simple layouts, breaking down the extensive information into bite sized pieces, and added bold number focused facts for visual appeal.

For The Conscious Marketer Podcast (TCM), hosted by Megan Kenealy, the rebranding was equally exciting. This podcast focuses on thought-provoking topics related to conscious business practices. Since TCM serves as an extension of Avenue beyond its core services, I aimed to develop a brand that utilized the secondary colors and existing icons, creating a fresh yet familiar look. I updated the podcast cover and designed templates for social media posts and potential merchandise, ensuring a cohesive identity that aligns with Avenue’s new look.

Change Management

Another significant aspect of my internship involved change management. This opportunity allowed me to learn the intricacies of onboarding a team to a new platform, specifically when transitioning from an existing system. I was tasked with mastering Teamwork, a project management tool, and understanding its various functionalities.

My responsibilities included creating a system to best organize and collaborate on client files within the platform, establishing effective naming conventions, and identifying best practices for report views and task management. To achieve these goals, I gained experiential insight from individuals outside of Avenue already utilizing Teamwork, participated in Q&A sessions with the Teamwork representative, Marcus Braden, and engaged in discussions with my teammates for feedback on system testing. Through this process of trial and error, we refined our approach and effectively transitioned our team onto the new platform through dedicated sessions.

Project Management and Administrative Support

In addition to my core projects, I provided project management and administrative support aimed at enhancing internal accountability and team efficiency. This role required a keen eye for process and strong organizational skills, in order to help create a rhythm of task and time tracking to stay aligned with internal social media goals.

Through these projects, I gained a clearer understanding of the hard and soft skills necessary to be successful in an agency environment.

Community Involvement

Beyond the responsibilities and hands-on experience I gained, one of the most meaningful lessons I learned during my time at Avenue was how deeply a business can care about more than just profits. Avenue’s status as a certified B Corp isn’t just a label—it’s a reflection of their unwavering commitment to social and environmental accountability. This commitment is something I personally connected with, and it’s deeply reflected in Anna Madill’s leadership. What I admire most about her is how she balances business success with a genuine desire to make a positive impact on people and the planet.

Anna and Reed Emerson sit on advisory boards, partner with like-minded organizations, rally the team to volunteer for cause and so much more. I had the opportunity to partake in a team volunteering event with SMART reading– an incredible organization dedicated to cleaning and preparing books for children in disadvantaged circumstances. A space that aims to improve child literacy rates and foster a more diverse and equitable future.

Gratitude and Growth

As I reflect on my time at Avenue, I am incredibly thankful for the mentorship and support from my colleagues. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to The Script for creating a platform that uplifts underrepresented groups and provides them with invaluable opportunities. Special thanks to Sharon Sherpa, Reed Emerson, and Anna Madill, who met with me regularly, offering encouragement and inspiration. I am equally grateful to Jazmyne Hudson, Megan Kenealy, and Guada Herrera, who fostered a collaborative environment where I could grow and learn without fear of making mistakes.

This internship has not only stretched my capabilities as an agent of change but has also opened my eyes to the value of a conscious business model. Avenue’s commitment to meaningful work, and their ability to say no to opportunities that do not align with their values, has profoundly influenced my perspective on business ethics.

As I prepare to take the next steps in my career, I am excited to carry the lessons learned and the experiences gained during my time at Avenue.

Thank you, Avenue, for providing me with this valuable stepping stone towards my future endeavors– Your impact on my professional journey will be felt for years to come.
